Observing Holy Week

One might say that every day spent in God’s presence is holy.  I would not argue with that.  In fact, I would strongly encourage you to have such an outlook on the ordinary moments of life.  Our every breath can be an experience of the holy as we become perceptive of it.  With that said, I still think it important to intentionally observe one very holy week.  To call one week holy in the midst of the everyday presence of God is to cause us to focus even more intently, to engage even more fully in the remembrance of the events of that week and how those holy moments make our everyday holy moments possible.  So, I encourage you to make time on your calendars and space in your hearts for this year’s observance of the most holy of weeks.  You will be provided with several opportunities and tools for your observation that include both the whole family of faith and moments of quiet solitude.  Here is a schedule for our congregational experiences:

Palm Sunday, April 1

11:00 AM Morning Worship: Remembering Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem

7:00 PM the combined church choirs of Second Avenue and Dykes Creek Baptist present: Experiencing God, The Musical at Rome City Auditorium

Monday-Wednesday April 2- 4

Noon - Community Holy Week Services at First United Methodist Church

The preachers for the week include Tony Brooks, Frank Murphy, and Clarice Ford.

Thursday, April 5

7:00 PM - Tenebrae Service and Communion in the SABC Sanctuary

Friday, April 6

Noon - Good Friday Service in the SABC Sanctuary

Saturday, April 7

10:00 - Noon Egg Hunt and lunch at SABC

Sunday, April 8

11:00 AM - Easter Celebration of the Resurrection

Also during this week, there will be opportunities for you to reflect in private.  The Prayer Ministry Team will facilitate private prayer walks before and after many of these corporate services.  The team will be available to guide you before and after the Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday service. Simply begin at the Prayer Room in the Narthex and you will receive further instruction.  Way of the Cross Devotional Guides will be distributed at the start of the week on Palm Sunday and additional copies will be available if people want to use them during these times of (other moments of) private devotions. I hope you will set the week aside as holy and that your observation of it will make every other moment more holy than before.

Blessings,

Monty

Worship Ministry

We are anticipating a good response from the Rome area for the joint presentation of Experiencing God the Musical with Dykes Creek Baptist Church.  This musical, and especially the discipleship materials of the same name, have been life-changing events for many people throughout the world.

This is a wonderful opportunity to invite folks you know who are put-off by being in church but might find being in the City Auditorium more acceptable.  Posters are up all over town and we have given out over 1800 tickets as a promotional tool. You will be seeing and hearing more about this event in the newspaper and on the radio.  The choir members, sound/video teams, and staffs from both churches have invested much time and expense in this project.  I am told that the Dykes Creek members are extremely excited by this event - for they haven’t done anything quite like this before. I hope you are excited as well. Prioritize your plans this Lenten season through the remembrance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on our behalf and join us April 1 for this musical and all of the events of Holy Week.

Steve

The Joyful Singers will be lead a service at Sunbridge Retirement home, March 29, at 11:00 am.  The music is easier than you think and the residents would love to see you, and hear you say, “ hello”. Come and join us.

Mission Miami:

We Need You!!!!!

Our Mission Trip to Miami is now only three months away.  So far, we have about 15 people who have committed or expressed interest in going.  We need twice that number to get the job done.  We need to take a team of 30 to cover the day camp as well as provide a small construction crew.  If you have been waiting to sign up, please wait no longer and let us know soon of your plans.  We will partner with Touching Miami with Love Ministries in the Overtown area of Miami.  The dates of the trip are Saturday, June 23 through Saturday, June 30.  The team will be involved in multiple projects while there.  The main project will be a day camp in a city park for about 200 children.  There will also be a weeklong construction project as well as a Sunday morning worship service for the homeless community and other ministries at night. The cost for participants will be $150 per person ($500 maximum per family) with a $50 deposit to hold your spot.  Sign up now on the bulletin board just outside the fellowship hall or by calling the church office at 706-232-3663.

Urgent Prayer Needs

If you have pressing needs for prayer, use the “Prayer Request” cards that you will find in the pew racks and in the Narthex Prayer Room to write those requests. Or you may use any piece of paper and   write “URGENT” in bold letters on the top. Give the cards to an usher or place them in the offering plate. They will be passed on to the appropriate people for attention. Remember that your family at Second Avenue Baptist cares and will pray for you.

Habitat for Humanity Needs Crew Leaders

Habitat for Humanity has a need for crew leaders. Crew leaders are persons with some building experience, either professional or do-it-yourself, who can lead crews of 3 - 5 persons. Persons can volunteer to lead a crew in a specific task, i.e. framing, painting, hanging drywall, etc. Or they can be a generalist and lead crews in more than one task. Crew leaders are needed primarily on Saturdays, especially this spring as we work on two houses. Or they can help during the week doing small tasks on the houses or helping with the construction of our offices.

Because we are working on three projects at one time - Women Build, Darlington Build, and office construction - we need such volunteers like never before.

If you can help in this way please let me know as soon as possible. If you know of another who would be a candidate, please give me their name and contact info, and I will make them aware of this great need and opportunity.

Please pray about this need as you make your decision or share this with a friend.

Executive Director,

Habitat for Humanity Rome/Floyd

Celebrating a Century of Faith: Our Story…

Minutes from 1926 and 1928

H. F. Joyner—Moderator, C. E. Scarbrough—Asst. Clerk

10-26— Bro. Joyner spoke of the influence the men had on boys coming to church and Sunday School. Also spoke of some of the men standing on the street corner smoking, and that had a bad effect on the boys.

12-26— Mr. Crozier had been asked to talk with a member who had conduct unbecoming to a church member. The person was in the service to apologize and ask forgiveness. Church forgave him, and gave him the right hand of welcome and renewed church fellowship with him.

5-28— Deacons recommended that members who did not attend church or contribute be contacted. Those who were not willing to support church with their presence and contributions would be asked to come before church conference and give reasons why the church should not withdraw church fellowship from them.

6-26— Each member was asked to give the sum of one day’s work or the equivalent amount of one day’s work for a period of three months.
