Dust

Living in Atlanta as long as I did, I became accustomed to the imagery of the mythical phoenix rising to new life out of the ashes that was often applied to Atlanta’s rebirth and growth following Sherman’s visit.  While that metaphor might be a bit over the top to relate to our progress in renovating our facilities, I think it would be safe to say that we are slowly emerging from the dust and there is plenty of dust from which to emerge.

I must say that I have gained a new appreciation for dust these past few weeks.  Up to now, I knew dust as that pollutant that makes us sneeze and as a great foe to my mother’s housecleaning.  Now, I see dust as a sign of real progress in a couple of ways.

Dust can mean that something old is being removed or disturbed.  Obviously, we have stirred up some dust around here (both real and metaphorical) as we have moved things and people around.  Such a stirring presents an opportunity to clean out in places we haven’t seen in a while or to reconsider just how much we need an object that has been able to gather so much dust through the years.  Sometimes recognizing the dust on something is a good way to decide to use it or move on without it.  If we choose to keep it, we clean it up and recommit ourselves to its use.

Dust can also mean that something new is coming into being.  These days you can see dust of all sorts in the air in the church hallways.  There is sheetrock dust, saw dust, dust from cutting tile, dust from cutting concrete and other unidentified clouds that are best left in that category.  Dust is a

by-product of work and its presence bears witness to progress.  Out of our dust will soon emerge a renovated worship space, fellowship hall and bathrooms. The work goes well and thanks go out to so many who are contributing to it.

So, dust is a good thing.  Still, I’ll be glad when there is no longer a coat of white on most things here and that will be soon.  But for now, I am thankful for the dust.

Blessings,

Monty

Thank You

The combination of everyone from Second Avenue working so well with the people of North Broad Baptist Church made this past week at the Community Soup Kitchen run so smoothly. Without the help of volunteers, the dedication of our day captains, and continued donations, we would not have such success. We were able to feed over 800 people!

Our next Community Soup Kitchen will be October 29 - November 2. If you are not already involved and would like to would volunteer in  October, contact Jean Rhodes.
