Making Room Do you ever wonder why God does what He does when He does it? I do all the time. I thank God for His patience as I learn more and more that God really does know what He is doing. Take this past Sunday for instance. I had hoped that we could have the Gold City concert in our newly renovated Sanctuary as we had planned. Obviously, that wasn’t to be despite the diligent effort of all involved. I’ll admit that I was a bit disappointed in that. Then Sunday evening as I sat in the City Auditorium it was clear what God was doing; He was making room. I am not sure what the actual count was but I would guess it was over 600, which is more than 100 over what our Sanctuary can hold not to mention what our parking lot can park. God was making room for more people to experience that evening. In that moment, God reinforced two important lessons for me. Lesson Number One: God is always making room for those who need to experience His love. To me, that is the primary focus of our renovation project. It is about more and better space that will allow us to reach more people. It has been fun to be close together this summer in the Chapel, but we need room to grow. Of course, the coordinate challenge for us is that as God makes room we must be diligent to work along with God to fill it. Lesson Number Two: Patience. I don’t have it yet. I am still learning that God’s time is God’s time and may not always coincide with what I want or have planned. If the Sanctuary had been ready Sunday, we would have turned away too many people. God knew better than I where we needed to be. So, I would ask your continued patience. It may be another week or two before we again worship in the Sanctuary. In the meantime, make room for guests in the Chapel by sitting close to the front and in the middle of the aisles. It may be a week or two before we can have our Wednesday night meals as usual or move our Sunday School classes back to the Fellowship Hall. We will need to be patient. I assure you that when we are ready; we’ll get the word out to everyone. I truly thank God for His timing and for His patience with me. God is making room both physically and spiritually for a new work in our family of faith. We simple must be patient and allow Him to work. Blessings, Monty
Worship Ministry The Chancel Choir is now rehearsing for just one hour, 7:00-8:00 PM, each Wednesday evening. Their responsibility for Sunday morning anthem's will be reduced this year; which means more time to sit with your family. Their only major event this season will be the Christmas Pageant. Come and join us this week as we prepare music for the glory of God. Deacon Nominations Sought It is that time of year again—time to nominate persons to serve as Deacon for the 2008-2010 term. Yellow Nomination Forms are available now from the church office. As you consider whom to nominate, you may wish to refer to the qualifications for Deacon as listed in the Church Constitution. These qualifications are also printed on the back of the Nomination form. Prayerfully contemplate whom you would nominate. You may offer up to six names. Please return the forms to the box outside of the office no later than September 16. The Deacon Council Nominating Committee will review the nominations and present a slate of potential Deacons for election on Sunday, November 11. Prayer Prayer doesn't change things--GOD changes things because we pray. But, in a way, we are changed just because we pray. When we pray for someone else, we grow in appreciation for that other person, we desire the very best for him or her, and our hearts are moved to desire God's perfect will for each of us. Let's pray for one another that we will be faithful to our Lord Jesus, that we all listen to what He is saying to us through this Second Century Campaign, and that we will be willing to do it. Celebrating a Century of Faith: Our Story… The following is an excerpt from the Rome News-Tribune, Monday, April 17, 1972: ‘Special friends’ treasured by Second Avenue Baptists By Lyn Batty, News-Tribune Staff Writer “Special friends” of Second Avenue Baptist Church congregation are students of the Woodlawn School for the mentally retarded. The children, ranging in age from 7 to 15, attend a weekly Sunday School from 9:30 a.m. until noon, where they sing, participate in group games and individual play, and hear young peoples’ versions of the Bible stories. The Sunday School is open to all denominations, for the purpose of the program, stated the pastor, Rev. Wallace McGill, is “to administer to the spiritual needs of the children who are too often forgotten.” The idea for such a project was broached in a study group of children's workers by McGill. Mrs. Swift Fortson, formerly a teacher at the Woodlawn School, volunteered her services. She and four other ladies visited the homes of 26 retarded children, and discussed the proposed program with the parents.
