Feeding the Hungry

October has been designated as Hunger Month by Baptist World Aid and we will observe it here at Second Avenue Baptist Church this year.  It is an opportunity for us to learn about the needs in our world, both locally and globally, and to take specific actions in meeting those needs.  I am pleased that we as a church will not have to go far to help meet the needs of the hungry because we already do that in many ways.  However, we can do more and we will have new opportunities to do so.

Globally you can support the efforts of Baptist World Aid as they support the United Nations Millennium Development Goal One to Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty.  You can help to fund BWAid programs around the world by simply designating a check or noting “World Hunger” on your envelope.  Your gift to BWAid will help to address the needs of the 824 billion people in the world who live in chronic hunger.

Locally, you can be directly involved in supplying food and preparing meals through our local ministry partnerships.

You can help Rome Action Ministry in two ways.  First, you can take a “Bag of Blessing” grocery bag from the Fellowship Hall and fill it up with the items listed on the bag and return it to the church.  This project will happen only in October as a way to get the South Rome Crisis Food Pantry stocked for the holiday rush.  Second, we are beginning a new ongoing collection for RAM as Second Avenue becomes RAM’s “pasta church”.  So, bring spaghetti, canned spaghetti sauce and boxes of mac and cheese to the collection bins on the first floor.  This will continue throughout the year.

You can also help feed people through either our Community Kitchen or the Meals and More programs.  Our next Community Kitchen week begins October 29.  We always need folks to help cook, serve, and clean up. Jean Rhodes is our very able coordinator for this ministry.  Our next Meals and More Tuesday Evening is October 9 at First Christian Church. You can help assemble and hand-out take out meals. Jim Rogers leads our efforts there.

We have been so blessed to have all that we need.  Let us willingly share with others who are less fortunate.  I am blessed to serve a church that provides so many opportunities for us to feed the hungry.  I hope you will take advantage of all of them.

Blessings,

Monty

The Youth Choir will meet this Sunday at 5:00 PM in the Choir Room. They are currently rehearsing music for worship services and a special Christmas event in which they will lead. They have formed a Praise Team for leading worship during youth events and our am worship services. They are also rehearsing a choreographed ensemble piece for the Christmas Pageant. Come and join us this week.

The Instrumental Ensemble will meet next on Sunday, October 21, at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary. Warm up those old band instruments from the past and join us as we prepare for the coming worship services.

What is Operation Christmas Child?

Operation Christmas Child is the unique project of Samaritan’s Purse that enables caring people to share God’s love with hurting girls and boys in the far corners of the globe.

Take an ordinary shoebox, fill it with toys and other presents, and you have an extraordinary gift for a child in need of joy and hope. Most important, these shoe- boxes provide opportunities for local believers to tell children about Jesus Christ through Gospel literature and evangelism programs.

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15, NIV).
Remember to pray for the boy or girl who will receive your shoebox. Through the power of a simple gift, you can bless a child’s life—and make a world of difference.

Second Avenue Baptist Church will collect filled shoeboxes at 6:00 PM Sunday, November 18 at our Thanksgiving Service, in the Sanctuary.

Brochures will be available soon containing gift ideas and labels.

Mark Your Calendar 8:00 AM, Saturday, November 3

Second Avenue will participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Apostles’ Build. This will be an all day event. SABC will be responsible for painting.
