Time Out

Have you ever just wanted to call a time out?  Time outs are valuable in sports.  Coaches call time out to get the right players on the field, to set up a play or strategy, to extend the game, sometimes just to stop the action long enough to think, other times to stem the other team’s momentum and often just to get a breath.  When to call a time out is often hotly debated (usually by television analysts) and certainly a matter of good coaching.  There are many times I would like to call a time out and maybe we should.

Life can get hectic and away from us at times.  Even when there are no crises or pressing issues, just the pace of life can be a strain.  Everyone needs a time out now and then.  We need to get out of the game and take a breath.  We need to stop and make sure that we have the right play called.  We need take a moment and just think.  I would encourage you to do that daily.  Consider beginning your day with prayer and some spiritual deep breathing.  Check the playbook (the Bible) and see what God wants you to be about for the day ahead.  And when the day starts to take on a mind of its own, call another time out and stop to pray wherever you are asking for peace, patience, guidance, strength, wisdom or whatever else you need in the moment.  The great thing about these kinds of time outs is they are not limited.  You have an infinite number.

You also need to take an extended time out occasionally.  As you read this, I am taking a time out we call Spring Break.  It is good to get away from the ordinary for a few days to get recharged and reset.  I am thankful for good colleagues and lay leadership who make it easy for me to get away and a church who understands that your pastors needs time away.

We all need a time out every now and then.  Of course the nature of the time out is such that the game goes on.  It is a momentary break the main point of which is to play better after it is over.  I know that many of you will start to take those extended time outs as the spring and summer comes.  You need them.  Just make sure you play better when you get back in the game.

See you on the other side of the break.

Blessings,

Monty

Rome Action Ministries and the Rome Braves Champion Charity Challenge:

From Cathy Aiken-Freeman or Rome Action Ministries

During 2007, Rome Action Ministries’ food pantries were visited 10,021 times by members of our community in great need.183, 000 total lbs. of groceries were distributed through the Garden Lakes Baptist Evening Food Pantry and the South Broad Methodist Daily Food Pantry. It was a record breaking year for us, more than doubling 2006’s, 4,000 visits and 80,000 total lbs. served. 2008 looks to be even bigger. The difficulty of making ends meet in a hard economy is sending people who have never previously sought help into our pantries each day. If the trend continues, we are on track for 15,000 visits this year.

What does this have to do with baseball? Rome Action Ministries is one of the charities chosen by the Rome Braves to participate in their 1st annual Champion Charity Challenge. On May 16, half the price of every ticket we sell to watch the Rome Braves in victory over the Hickory Crawdads, goes to our organization. Tickets are $6. The game starts at 7:00 PM. The four charities which sell the most tickets, thereby raising the most funds for their mission, will compete in a pre-game and between-inning field day for the prize of Charity Champion. This doesn’t come with a trophy—but with something far better.  $500 and Eternal Bragging Rights.

SABC has pre-purchased 75 tickets.  $3 of every ticket sold goes back to RAM.  Tickets are $6 and available in the church office.
